Spring Into Action: Your Annual Foundation Maintenance Checklist

Spring is the perfect time to give your home’s foundation some much-needed attention. After months of freezing temperatures, shifting soil, and melting snow, your foundation may have experienced stress or damage — and the earlier you catch a problem, the easier it is to fix.

At Keystone Basement Systems, we know your foundation supports more than just your home — it supports your family, your memories, and your peace of mind. That’s why we recommend completing this simple spring checklist to spot early warning signs before they turn into costly repairs.

1. Test Your Sump Pump

Spring rain can bring high water tables, and your sump pump is your first line of defense against basement flooding. Pour a bucket of water into the pit to make sure it kicks on. If it doesn’t, or if it’s running sluggishly, it may be time for a repair or upgrade.

2. Check Exterior Foundation for Cracks

Walk around the outside of your home and look for visible cracks in the foundation walls. Even small hairline cracks can widen over time and allow water intrusion. If you notice cracks, bulging walls, or areas that appear to be settling, call in the experts for a professional inspection.

3. Check for Proper Grading Around the House

The soil around your foundation should slope away from the house to prevent water from pooling next to the structure. If the grade has flattened or shifted, add soil and tamp it down to restore a healthy slope.

4. Make Sure Gutters Are Draining Away

Clogged or misaligned gutters can dump gallons of water next to your foundation. Clean out debris, check downspouts, and consider adding extensions to direct water at least 6 feet away from the house.

5. Adjust Your Sprinkler System

Ensure your sprinkler heads aren’t soaking the foundation. Excess water can erode soil and put pressure on basement walls. Aim sprinkler heads away from the house and inspect for leaks.
