What is MRSA (Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus)?
- MRSA is an infection caused by a group of bacteria called staphylococcus aureus.
- The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report that the staph infection kills 17,000 people each year and causes 90,000 others to develop serious infections.
- From January through October, there were 132 MRSA cases reported to the PA local health departments, compared with 59 cases in all of 2006. Of the cases reported so far this year, 64 were among adults, compared with 17 cases last year.
- The MRSA superbug has been reported in schools, especially among athletes. It can cause superficial lesions that often look like spider bites.
How is MRSA transmitted?
- MRSA is usually transmitted by direct skin-to-skin contact or contact with shared items or surfaces that have come into contact with someone else's infection (e.g., towels, used bandages).
